In this Indonesian city, recycling gets people a free bus ticket

When a river in Bandung, Indonesia, was so choked with plastic trash earlier this year that the water was essentially invisible, the government called in the army to clean it out. It was a temporary fix: Indonesia has one of the world’s largest problems with plastic waste, much of which ends up flowing into the ocean.

How to recycle the right way

I thought we had reached a celebratory moment in our household when we produced by volume more recycling than trash. Into the bin they went: glass food jars (clink!), folded cardboard packaging (crunch!), and plastic clam-shell salad containers (crick!).
